Dog Health Problems

Just like people, there are many dog health problems; some can be treated or vaccinated against and others can only be avoided and treated if they become a problem. There are many diseases that are well known such as rabies and canine parovirus and others that are rare but deadly like canine herpesvirus. In some places these diseases have been almost completely wiped out, while in developing countries they are rampant.

Rabies is a virus that attacks the brain of a dog or whatever animal it infects. It is transmitted through the saliva when an animal bites. Animals that get rabies commonly become aggressive and attack anything nearby. This is because the brain is being attacked by the virus and causes the animal to be hyperactive to all stimuli nearby. After a few days the animal will begin to experience paralysis and will usually die from respiratory arrest.

Another common dog health problem is canine parovirus. This is an extremely contagious virus that commonly attacks puppies. The virus causes the puppy to become extremely dehydrated and have a fever. If it is not treated quickly there is not a high survival rate.

Gastric torsion is a condition that affects larger breeds that have narrow chests. The stomach of the dog twists up and begins to cause a blockage that does not let gas escape. If not treated with surgery within a few hours the dog will die. If your dog has had an episode of gastric torsion in the past, then he or she is at a much higher risk of having it happen again.

Just like people, there are dog health problems that come in genes. Cancer, eye problems, and muscle deformities can be found in all breeds. The best way to prevent disease is put your dog on a healthy diet and make sure he or she gets plenty of exercise. Regular vet visits will also ensure that their health is ok so you can enjoy your pet for years to come!
