Dog SocializationDog socialization is important if you ever plan to have guests over, plan to walk your dog, or plan to have other pets. The best time to socialize a dog is when they are young; it is not hard to get them socialized, it just takes time and patience. It is well worth the effort as it gives your dog confidence, good manners, and allows you to take him or her places without worrying about aggressive behavior. If you have a large dog it is especially important to socialize them to avoid attacks that could cause horrible injuries. The best time to train a dog is when they are young. Just like human children, puppies learn a lot about their world in the first weeks of life. Things they experience in their environment from three weeks to twelve weeks old are retained and have a dramatic impact on their mannerisms. One simple way to effectively socialize them to people and other dogs is puppy training classes. The benefit of these is that there will be lots of puppies to play with and they will be trained at the same time! The classes provide the puppy with a chance to see other breeds of dogs and learn how to be calm in chaotic situations. Letting your new puppy meet new people is an easy way to socialize them. Dog parks are a great way to meet new people, other dogs, and sometimes other pets. Dogs that are not socialized can be nervous, aggressive, or extremely shy. When an unexpected situation arises they do not know how to act and this can cause problems. Aggressive dogs sometimes attack when they become scared or confused. This can prove to be a dangerous situation for kids, friends, and workers like the mailman. If the dog is not taught that these people are meant to be there then an attack could seriously injure a person. Dog socialization is an important responsibility of any owner. Taking the time to introduce your dog to other pets, people, and new situations is something that will pay off in the long run. It will make your dog more confident and allow you to be sure he or she will behave outside of the home! |
